The Dutch tool chest is a compact, portable storage solution that keeps essential hand tools accessible and protected. This version fits on a benchtop or in a small shop.

Materials List

  • ¾" Pine boards, approx. 1×12 – 10 ft

  • ½" plywood for back – 24" × 30"

  • 1¼" wood screws

  • Wood glue

  • Butt hinges (2)

  • Leather or metal chest handles

  • Paint (milk paint or oil-based enamel)

Cut List

  • Front/back panels: 20" × 26"

  • Side panels: 12" deep × 20" tall (angled top to 12" at back, 20" at front)

  • Bottom: 26" × 12"

  • Top lid: 27" × 13"

  • Back panel (plywood): 24" × 30"

Tools Needed

  • Saw (circular, table, or handsaw)

  • Drill/driver

  • Clamps

  • Sander

  • Hinges and chisel (for mortising)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Assemble Box

    • Attach sides to front panel using glue and screws. Add bottom and back.

  2. Add Lid

    • Mount hinges to lid and back panel. Add stop strip under the lid for alignment.

  3. Install Handles and Paint

    • Attach handles. Finish with durable paint to protect against wear.
