Article 154: Build a Shaker-Style Peg Rail

Shaker peg rails are timeless, practical, and incredibly simple to make. They can organize tools, coats, hats, or even display workpieces in the shop.
Materials
1×4 clear pine or cherry – 6' long
6–8 hardwood shaker pegs (⅞" base)
Wood glue
Shellac or milk paint
Tools Needed
Drill with ⅞" bit (or Forstner)
Measuring tape and pencil
Sander
Router (optional, for edge treatment)
Build Steps
Mark Peg Locations
Space pegs 8–10" apart, centered on board height.
Drill Holes
Use a drill press or guide to drill ⅞" holes ⅝" deep.
Glue and Insert Pegs
Apply glue to each peg tenon and tap into holes.
Finish
Sand lightly. Apply shellac for a natural finish, or traditional Shaker milk paint.
