Article 154: Build a Shaker-Style Peg Rail

By: A Woodworker Who Appreciates Functional Elegance

Shaker peg rails are timeless, practical, and incredibly simple to make. They can organize tools, coats, hats, or even display workpieces in the shop.

Materials

  • 1×4 clear pine or cherry – 6' long

  • 6–8 hardwood shaker pegs (⅞" base)

  • Wood glue

  • Shellac or milk paint

Tools Needed

  • Drill with ⅞" bit (or Forstner)

  • Measuring tape and pencil

  • Sander

  • Router (optional, for edge treatment)

Build Steps

  1. Mark Peg Locations

    • Space pegs 8–10" apart, centered on board height.

  2. Drill Holes

    • Use a drill press or guide to drill ⅞" holes ⅝" deep.

  3. Glue and Insert Pegs

    • Apply glue to each peg tenon and tap into holes.

  4. Finish

    • Sand lightly. Apply shellac for a natural finish, or traditional Shaker milk paint.
