A step-back cupboard is both decorative and functional, perfect for storing dishes, books, or shop items. The design features a shallow upper hutch atop a deeper lower cabinet.
Materials List
¾" Pine or poplar boards:
1×12 – 20 linear feet
1×10 – 12 linear feet
1×4 – 10 linear feet (face frame and trim)
¼" plywood for cabinet back – 48" × 72"
2 pairs of hinges
Knobs or latches
Wood glue and screws
Tools Needed
Table saw or circular saw
Drill and bits
Pocket hole jig (optional)
Sander
Clamps
Router (for decorative edge work)

Base cabinet: 36" wide × 34" high × 16" deep
Upper hutch: 36" wide × 36" high × 10" deep
Overall height: 70"
Build Steps
Build Base Cabinet
Assemble a basic box with a fixed shelf halfway up.
Add inset doors and a face frame.
Build Upper Hutch
Shallower case with two or three adjustable shelves.
Optional glass panel doors.
Attach Units and Add Trim
Center upper hutch on lower cabinet and secure from inside.
Add crown molding or a bead to top.
