A wooden stepladder is essential in any workshop or home. This version folds for easy storage and uses wedged through-tenons for a rock-solid build.

Materials List

  • 1×4 maple or ash:

    • (2) Legs: 48"

    • (3) Steps: 18"

    • (1) Back support rail: 36"

  • ⅜" oak wedges

  • Wood glue

  • Brass hinges

Tools Required

  • Tenon saw

  • Chisels

  • Drill

  • Mallet

  • Square

Build Steps

  1. Layout and Cut Legs

    • Bevel bottoms at 5° for stable stance.

  2. Cut Mortises

    • Through-mortises in legs for steps, ¾" × 1¼".

  3. Cut and Fit Tenons

    • On step ends; saw kerfs for wedges.

  4. Assemble Ladder

    • Glue and wedge tenons from outside.

  5. Attach Folding Rear Support

    • Use brass hinges to connect back rail.
