Traditional Japanese toolboxes are elegant, functional, and built with precision. This lidded design features finger joints and a locking wedge lid.
Materials
1/2" or 3/4" hardwood (cedar or pine preferred):
(2) sides: 6" Ć 24"
(2) ends: 6" Ć 8"
(1) bottom: 8" Ć 24"
(1) lid: 8" Ć 25"
(1) wedge: 1" Ć 1.5" Ć 3"
Wood glue
Tools Needed
Saw (hand or table)
Chisels
Square
Clamps
Router or shoulder plane
Steps
Cut All Parts to Size
Ensure square edges for tight joinery.
Cut Finger Joints
Mark and chisel or saw finger joints for sides and ends.
Assemble Box
Glue and clamp, check for square. Fit bottom into dado or glue it flush.
Shape and Fit Lid
Lid should overhang slightly with notches to accept wedge.
Add Wedge Lock
Cut a groove and fit wedge to hold lid in place during transport.
