Article 123: Building a Japanese-Style Toolbox

Traditional Japanese toolboxes are elegant, functional, and built with precision. This lidded design features finger joints and a locking wedge lid.

Materials

  • 1/2" or 3/4" hardwood (cedar or pine preferred):

    • (2) sides: 6" Ɨ 24"

    • (2) ends: 6" Ɨ 8"

    • (1) bottom: 8" Ɨ 24"

    • (1) lid: 8" Ɨ 25"

    • (1) wedge: 1" Ɨ 1.5" Ɨ 3"

  • Wood glue

Tools Needed

  • Saw (hand or table)

  • Chisels

  • Square

  • Clamps

  • Router or shoulder plane

Steps

  1. Cut All Parts to Size

    • Ensure square edges for tight joinery.

  2. Cut Finger Joints

    • Mark and chisel or saw finger joints for sides and ends.

  3. Assemble Box

    • Glue and clamp, check for square. Fit bottom into dado or glue it flush.

  4. Shape and Fit Lid

    • Lid should overhang slightly with notches to accept wedge.

  5. Add Wedge Lock

    • Cut a groove and fit wedge to hold lid in place during transport.
