Shaker furniture emphasizes form following function. This pine bench is ideal for a hallway, entryway, or mudroom, and requires minimal materials.
Materials
1x12 pine board (6' long) – seat
1x4 pine (8' total) – stretchers and legs
2x2 stock for braces
1 1/4" wood screws
Wood glue
Danish oil or milk paint
Tools Needed
Hand saw or circular saw
Drill/driver
Clamps
Sander
Square and tape measure
Steps
Cut the Seat and Legs
Seat: 36" long
Legs: 17" tall, tapering to 2" at bottom for Shaker look
Assemble Base
Connect legs with a stretcher (34") using pocket screws or half-laps.
Attach to Seat
Center base under seat. Secure with glue and screws from underneath.
Add Diagonal Braces
Install 2x2 diagonal braces from stretcher to seat underside for added rigidity.
Finish
Sand smooth. Apply Danish oil for a traditional, matte finish.
