Article 39: Building a Shaker-Style Pine Bench – Simplicity in Design

Shaker furniture emphasizes form following function. This pine bench is ideal for a hallway, entryway, or mudroom, and requires minimal materials.

Materials

  • 1x12 pine board (6' long) – seat

  • 1x4 pine (8' total) – stretchers and legs

  • 2x2 stock for braces

  • 1 1/4" wood screws

  • Wood glue

  • Danish oil or milk paint

Tools Needed

  • Hand saw or circular saw

  • Drill/driver

  • Clamps

  • Sander

  • Square and tape measure

Steps

  1. Cut the Seat and Legs

    • Seat: 36" long

    • Legs: 17" tall, tapering to 2" at bottom for Shaker look

  2. Assemble Base

    • Connect legs with a stretcher (34") using pocket screws or half-laps.

  3. Attach to Seat

    • Center base under seat. Secure with glue and screws from underneath.

  4. Add Diagonal Braces

    • Install 2x2 diagonal braces from stretcher to seat underside for added rigidity.

  5. Finish

    • Sand smooth. Apply Danish oil for a traditional, matte finish.
