Shaker furniture is known for its simplicity, functionality, and grace. This step stool is perfect for kitchen, shop, or bathroom use—and it’s rock solid.
Materials
¾" cherry or pine board:
(2) sides: 8" × 14"
(1) top: 8" × 18"
(1) stretcher: 3" × 16"
Wood glue
Finish: shellac or satin polyurethane
Tools Needed
Jigsaw or bandsaw
Drill and bit (for handle hole)
Router with roundover bit
Clamps
Sandpaper
Steps
Cut Sides
Trace and cut a gentle arch at the base of each side for visual lift.
Drill a centered hand-hole at the top of one side for carrying.
Attach Stretcher
Cut dados into the side panels 3" from the base. Fit stretcher snugly and glue.
Attach Top
Center top panel on the frame, overhanging evenly. Glue and clamp.
Round Edges
Use router to round all corners and edges for comfort.
Finish
Sand to 220 grit. Apply shellac for a traditional Shaker look.
