Article 33: Building a Simple Wall-Mounted Tool Rack

Keeping hand tools visible and within reach increases efficiency and enjoyment. This basic tool rack is easy to build and endlessly customizable.

Materials

  • 1 piece 1x6 @ 36" (backboard)

  • 1 piece 1x3 @ 36" (shelf lip)

  • 1 piece 1x4 @ 36" (shelf surface)

  • Wood screws (1 1/4")

  • Wood glue

  • Danish oil or shop finish

Tools Needed

  • Saw (hand saw, circular saw, or miter saw)

  • Drill/driver

  • Tape measure and pencil

  • Clamps

  • Stud finder (for mounting)

Steps

  1. Cut and Layout Boards
    Backboard = 1x6
    Shelf = 1x4 glued to lip (1x3) at 90°

  2. Assemble Shelf
    Attach lip to shelf first. Glue and screw to backboard ~3" from bottom.

  3. Add Pegs or Hooks (optional)
    Drill holes for dowels or install hooks above the shelf.

  4. Sand and Finish
    Light sanding. Wipe-on finish.

  5. Mount on Wall
    Use 2 1/2" screws into studs. Level carefully.
