Article 14: Building a Sturdy Wooden Toolbox

A solid wooden toolbox keeps your tools secure and within reach, plus it adds a bit of old-school craftsmanship to your workshop.

Materials

MaterialQuantity1x12 pine board1 sheet, 36” x 12”1x6 pine board2 pieces, 12” long (for handles)3/4” plywood1 sheet, for bottomWood screws1 pack (1-1/4” screws)Wood glueAs needed

Tools Needed

  • Circular saw or miter saw

  • Drill

  • Wood clamps

  • Sandpaper

Steps

  1. Cut the Sides

    • Cut four pieces from the 1x12 to create the sides of the toolbox (12” x 8” pieces).

  2. Assemble the Box

    • Glue and screw the sides together to form a rectangle.

  3. Make the Handles

    • Cut two pieces of 1x6 pine to 12” for the handles. Attach them with screws to the sides.

  4. Add the Bottom

    • Cut the plywood to fit the bottom of the box and attach it with wood glue and screws.

  5. Sand and Finish

    • Sand all surfaces smooth and apply a finish of your choice.
