A classic blanket chest made of hardwood with a cedar-lined interior provides both storage and protection against pests. A satisfying mix of casework and finishing.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood (cherry or walnut) – ~14 board feet

  • 1/4" aromatic cedar plywood – 1 sheet

  • 3/4" birch plywood (bottom)

  • Brass piano hinge

  • Soft-close lid support

  • Wood glue and screws

Cut List

  • Front/back panels: 36" x 18"

  • Side panels: 18" x 18"

  • Bottom panel: 34 1/2" x 16 1/2"

  • Top: 38" x 20"

  • Interior cedar lining: Cut to fit inside box

Tools Needed

  • Table saw

  • Router with roundover bit

  • Clamps

  • Hinge jig or drill

  • Brad nailer or hammer

Steps

  1. Build Box

    • Use rabbets or biscuits to join front, sides, and back. Glue and clamp square.

  2. Add Bottom

    • Install plywood bottom with glue and screws into rabbets.

  3. Apply Cedar Lining

    • Cut cedar panels to fit snugly inside. Glue or brad-nail into place.

  4. Attach Lid

    • Use a piano hinge along the back and install a lid support to prevent slamming.

  5. Finish

    • Oil or shellac the outside. Leave cedar raw for maximum scent.
