Article 118: Crafting a Shaker-Style Step Stool

A Shaker-style step stool combines practicality with graceful lines. This two-step stool is perfect for kitchen shelves, workshops, or kids brushing their teeth.

Materials

  • 3/4" pine or cherry:

    • (2) sides: 18" Γ— 11"

    • (2) steps: 18" Γ— 8" (bottom), 15" Γ— 7" (top)

    • (2) riser supports: 15" Γ— 4"

  • Wood glue

  • Finish: shellac or milk paint

Tools Needed

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw

  • Drill/driver

  • Clamps

  • Sander

  • Chisel

  • Tape measure and square

Steps

  1. Shape the Sides

    • Cut out arch at base and rear slant on side profiles.

  2. Attach Steps

    • Bottom step 4" from ground, top step flush with side tops. Glue and screw into pocket holes or use dowels.

  3. Add Riser Support

    • Under top step, glue and screw the risers for added strength.

  4. Finish

    • Sand all edges round, paint or apply a natural oil or shellac.
