A dovetailed silverware tray is a beautiful, compact project that hones joinery skills and elevates kitchen storage.
Materials
¼" or ⅜" thick hardwood (maple, cherry, or walnut)
2 pieces @ 12" × 4" (long sides)
2 pieces @ 8" × 4" (short sides)
1 piece @ 11¾" × 7¾" for base
Wood glue
Optional felt liner
Tools Required
Dovetail saw
Chisels
Clamps
Square
Router or plane (optional for leveling)
Build Process
Cut Dovetails
Layout tails first, then transfer to pins.
Use a sharp chisel for clean sockets.
Glue Up Tray
Dry fit first. Then apply glue, clamp squarely.
Attach Base
Use glue or tiny brads to fasten the base.
Underside rabbeted if desired for a flush fit.
Sand and Finish
Finish with food-safe oil or shellac.
