Fixing a Broken Chair Rung

Article 134: Fixing a Broken Chair Rung

By: A Woodworker Who’s Repaired Every Chair in His House (Twice)

Loose or broken rungs are common in older chairs. This fix is strong and doesn’t require taking the whole chair apart.

Materials

  • Wood glue (PVA or hide glue)

  • Dowel stock (same diameter as rung)

  • Sandpaper

  • Touch-up stain (optional)

Tools Needed

  • Drill and bit (same as dowel)

  • Mallet

  • Clamps

  • Coping saw (if rung is splintered)

Steps

  1. Assess and Disassemble

    • Carefully remove broken rung ends. Save undamaged pieces.

  2. Drill Out Mortises

    • Drill into old rung holes to clean them and prepare for new dowel/rung.

  3. Cut Replacement

    • Cut new rung or dowel to length, matching curve if needed.

  4. Glue and Assemble

    • Glue both ends, insert, and clamp until dry.

  5. Blend Finish

    • Use matching stain or paint to blend repair with chair.
