Japanese tool chests are elegant and durable, using simple joinery to protect valuable hand tools. They prioritize order, portability, and resilience.

Materials

  • ¾" thick cypress, pine, or poplar:

    • (2) sides: 30" × 12"

    • (2) ends: 12" × 12"

    • (1) bottom: 30" × 12"

    • (1) lid: 30" × 13" (overhang)

  • Wood glue

  • Cut nails or pegs (optional)

  • Hinges and clasp (optional)

Tools Required

  • Ryoba saw or handsaw

  • Chisels

  • Hammer

  • Square

  • Plane

Build Instructions

  1. Join the Box

    • Use rabbets and nails or dowels for joinery.

    • Bottom is recessed with grooves.

  2. Make the Lid

    • Slight overhang; slide-fit or hinged.

    • Optional battens to prevent warping.

  3. Interior Organization

    • Add tool holders or trays as needed.

  4. Finish

    • Use oil or leave natural.
