Article 41: Refinishing a Mid-Century Side Table – Repair, Strip, and Revive

By: A Woodworker Who Respects Good Design

Mid-century furniture has clean lines and solid craftsmanship. Restoring a worn side table brings it back to life while preserving its minimalist appeal.

Materials

  • Vintage side table (real wood)

  • Chemical stripper (optional)

  • Wood filler (if needed)

  • Sandpaper: 80, 150, 220 grit

  • Watco Danish Oil or satin polyurethane

Tools Needed

  • Putty knife

  • Orbital sander or sanding block

  • Rags and gloves

  • Screwdriver (to disassemble)

  • Small brushes

Restoration Process

  1. Assess and Disassemble
Remove legs, drawer pulls, and any loose joints. Inspect for veneer damage or water stains.

  2. Strip or Sand
Use stripper to remove heavy finishes, or sand gently to expose clean wood.

  3. Repair and Fill
Fix chips or cracks with filler. Let dry, then sand smooth.

  4. Apply Finish
Use Danish oil for a warm, low-sheen look. Apply 2–3 coats.

  5. Reassemble and Enjoy
Tighten joints, reattach hardware, and admire the revived piece.
