Restoring a wooden chair can breathe new life into a piece that’s been in the family for generations or found at a flea market. This guide walks through the basic restoration of a worn, wobbly chair.

  • Clamps

  • Putty knife

  • Sander or sanding block

  • Small hammer

  • Chisel

Steps

  1. Disassemble the Chair
    Carefully remove the legs, seat, and backrest if possible. Label parts for reassembly.

  2. Clean the Surfaces
    Use a damp cloth to remove dirt and oils. For stubborn grime, a mild soap solution helps.

  3. Repair Loose Joints
    Scrape out old glue. Reapply wood glue to joints and clamp until dry.

  4. Fill Cracks and Chips
    Apply wood filler to damaged areas. Sand smooth after drying.

  5. Sand All Surfaces
    Sand with 80 grit, then 150, and finish with 220 grit.

  6. Stain or Paint
    Apply your chosen stain or paint evenly. Let dry completely.

  7. Apply Clear Finish
    Coat with polyurethane for protection.
