Routing Decorative Edge Profiles – Clean Corners and Class

Article 31: Routing Decorative Edge Profiles – Clean Corners and Class

By: A Woodworker Who Believes in Elegant Finishing Touches

Decorative edge profiles elevate a simple board to fine furniture. Using a router, you can add classic touches like ogee, round-over, and cove profiles with repeatable precision.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood sample boards (cherry, oak, or maple) – at least 12"x6"

  • Scrap board for test runs

  • Painter’s tape (for marking and tearout prevention)

Tools Needed

  • Router (handheld or table-mounted)

  • Assorted router bits (round-over, ogee, Roman ogee, chamfer)

  • Push blocks (for safety)

  • Clamps (if routing freehand)

  • Hearing and eye protection

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Select Your Bit
Choose the profile bit. Round-overs soften edges; ogee adds classical S-curves.

  2. Install and Adjust Bit Height
Mount in router collet. Set height for desired depth—test on scrap.

  3. Mark and Secure Workpiece
Use painter’s tape to prevent chipping on exit side. Clamp or use a router table with fence.

  4. Route the Edge
Move right to left (or counterclockwise on a table) to control direction and prevent tear-out.

  5. Sand Lightly
Light sanding ensures clean transitions, especially with more ornate profiles.
