Shaker Peg Rail – Simple Elegance on the Wall

Article 76: Shaker Peg Rail – Simple Elegance on the Wall

By: A Woodworker Who Appreciates Form in Function

The Shakers were known for their clean, efficient designs. A peg rail isn’t just for hanging coats—it can run the length of a room to organize tools, hats, brooms, and more.

Materials

  • 1×4 hardwood board – 48" long (cherry, maple, or poplar)

  • Shaker pegs – (6–8), 3 1/2" long, 3/8" tenon

  • Wood glue

  • Mounting screws and wall anchors

Tools Needed

  • Drill with 3/8" bit

  • Measuring tools (ruler, square)

  • Sander

  • Level

Steps

  1. Cut and Sand Rail

    • Trim board to 48", ease edges with sander or hand plane.

  2. Mark Peg Spacing

    • Evenly space 6–8 pegs along the board, typically 6–8" apart and centered vertically.

  3. Drill Holes

    • Use a 3/8" bit and drill 5/8" deep. Keep holes square to the board.

  4. Glue and Install Pegs

    • Apply glue to tenons and insert pegs. Let dry overnight.

  5. Mount to Wall

    • Screw into studs or use anchors. A French cleat works well if you prefer no visible fasteners.
