1×4 hardwood board – 48" long (cherry, maple, or poplar)
Shaker pegs – (6–8), 3 1/2" long, 3/8" tenon

Level
Steps
Cut and Sand Rail
Trim board to 48", ease edges with sander or hand plane.
Mark Peg Spacing
Evenly space 6–8 pegs along the board, typically 6–8" apart and centered vertically.
Drill Holes
Use a 3/8" bit and drill 5/8" deep. Keep holes square to the board.
Glue and Install Pegs
Apply glue to tenons and insert pegs. Let dry overnight.
Mount to Wall
Screw into studs or use anchors. A French cleat works well if you prefer no visible fasteners.
