Article 60: Steam-Bending a Contemporary Coat Stand – Elegance Through Curves

By: A Woodworker Inspired by Scandinavian Design

Steam bending allows you to shape wood into elegant curves. This modern coat stand uses three bent ash strips to create a tripod form.

Materials

  • (3) 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 72" ash strips

  • Hardwood dowel (1" diameter x 12")

  • Screws, glue

  • Steam box and kettle

Tools Needed

  • Steam box and heat source

  • Bending form (curved plywood form clamped to table)

  • Clamps

  • Drill

  • Sandpaper

Steps

  1. Prep Wood

    • Ash works well for bending. Soak ends if needed.

  2. Steam

    • Steam for 1 hour per inch of thickness. These strips require about 30 minutes.

  3. Bend on Form

    • Clamp each strip to a bending form (3" radius curve). Let dry overnight in form.

  4. Assemble Stand

    • Arrange three legs tripod-style. Connect at top using dowel and screws through notched tops.

  5. Finish

    • Smooth surface with fine sandpaper and oil. Consider a liming wax for modern look.
