Article 60: Steam-Bending a Contemporary Coat Stand – Elegance Through Curves
By: A Woodworker Inspired by Scandinavian Design
Steam bending allows you to shape wood into elegant curves. This modern coat stand uses three bent ash strips to create a tripod form.
Materials
(3) 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 72" ash strips
Hardwood dowel (1" diameter x 12")
Screws, glue
Steam box and kettle
Tools Needed
Steam box and heat source
Bending form (curved plywood form clamped to table)
Clamps
Drill
Sandpaper
Steps
Prep Wood
Ash works well for bending. Soak ends if needed.
Steam
Steam for 1 hour per inch of thickness. These strips require about 30 minutes.
Bend on Form
Clamp each strip to a bending form (3" radius curve). Let dry overnight in form.
Assemble Stand
Arrange three legs tripod-style. Connect at top using dowel and screws through notched tops.
Finish
Smooth surface with fine sandpaper and oil. Consider a liming wax for modern look.
