By: A Woodworker Who Trusts the Old Ways

Hide glue is unmatched for reversible joints, crack-filling, and antique repairs. It’s been used for centuries—and for good reason.

Why Use Hide Glue

  • Reversible with heat and moisture

  • Long open time when warm

  • Self-clamping as it tightens while drying

  • Excellent for musical instruments and restoration

Tools and Materials

  • Granular hide glue

  • Glue pot or water bath

  • Brush or small applicator

  • Warm water for cleanup

How to Use It

  1. Prepare Glue

    • Mix with water (approx. 1:1 ratio).

    • Heat to 140°F in a glue pot.

  2. Apply Warm

    • Spread thinly on both surfaces.

    • Work quickly while warm.

  3. Clamp Immediately

    • No need for excessive pressure.

  4. Cleanup

    • Wipe up with warm water.

    • Dries clear and hard.
