Article 85: Under-Sink Cabinet – Custom Storage for a Tricky Space

By: A Woodworker Who Measures Twice and Builds to Fit the Weirdest Angles

Many sinks leave dead space below due to plumbing. A custom-fit cabinet adds usable storage without interfering with pipes.

Materials

  • 3/4" plywood (birch or maple): 1 full sheet

  • 1/4" plywood (back): 24" × 30"

  • Edge banding or hardwood strips

  • Euro-style hinges (2)

  • Magnetic door catches

  • Wood glue, screws

Tools Needed

  • Circular saw or table saw

  • Drill and bits

  • Kreg pocket hole jig (optional)

  • Jigsaw (for cutouts)

  • Measuring tape

  • Clamps

Steps

  1. Measure Sink & Plumbing Layout

    • Identify clearances for traps and hoses. Sketch layout accordingly.

  2. Cut Case Panels

    • Sides: 24" H × 18" D

    • Bottom: 18" D × 28" W

    • Top and Rails: leave center open for plumbing

  3. Cut Notches for Pipes

    • Use a jigsaw to notch or cut access holes as needed.

  4. Assemble Case

    • Glue/screw panels. Add back panel and reinforce corners.

  5. Build and Mount Doors

    • Simple shaker doors from 1×3 or use plywood with edge trim.

  6. Finish

    • Paint or clear coat. Mount with hinges and attach magnetic catch.
