Article 82: Wall-Mounted Wine Rack – Form and Function for Small Spaces

By: A Woodworker Who Knows the Value of a Good Glass and a Solid Joinery

This wine rack hangs on the wall and holds six bottles securely, combining aesthetic appeal and practical storage using simple joinery.

Materials

  • 1×6 hardwood (walnut or oak), 36" long (backboard)

  • 1×4 hardwood, (3) @ 16" (shelves)

  • 3/4" dowel, 12" (pegs)

  • Wood glue

  • Hanging hardware

Tools Needed

  • Drill with Forstner bit (1 1/2")

  • Miter saw

  • Measuring tape and square

  • Clamps

  • Sander

Steps

  1. Cut the Back and Shelves

    • Backboard: 36" × 5 1/2"

    • Shelves: 16" wide, with front edge notched to hold bottle necks.

  2. Mark and Drill Bottle Holes

    • On each shelf, drill three evenly spaced 1 1/2" semicircular notches using a Forstner bit, halfway through the front edge.

  3. Attach Shelves

    • Glue and screw shelves to the backboard with slight upward tilt (~5°) to prevent bottles slipping.

  4. Install Dowels

    • Drill holes beneath each shelf and insert dowels at an angle to cradle the bottle’s base.

  5. Sand and Finish

    • Smooth all surfaces. Finish with oil or clear coat. Mount securely to wall studs.
