Article 146: Bleaching Wood for a Modern Look

By: A Woodworker Who Isn’t Afraid of White Oak Looking White

Bleaching wood brightens its tone and highlights the grain. Great for modern or coastal décor.

Materials & Tools

  • A/B two-part wood bleach (oxalic acid is for spot removal only)

  • Protective gloves and eye protection

  • Natural-bristle brush

  • Fine grit sandpaper

  • Distilled water

Steps

  1. Sand the Surface

    • Use 150-grit to 220-grit paper. Remove all finish or oils.

  2. Mix and Apply Bleach

    • Follow manufacturer’s instructions. Apply part A, then part B with a brush.

  3. Let React and Dry

    • Let the wood sit for 4–8 hours in a ventilated area.

  4. Neutralize and Rinse

    • Use a mix of water and vinegar to neutralize the chemicals.

  5. Finish the Surface

    • Sand lightly and seal with clear polyurethane or water-based lacquer.

Tips

  • Works best on oak, ash, and maple.

  • Do a test board first to preview the result.

  • Always wear gloves—this is serious chemistry.
