Article 145: Build a Wall-Mounted Folding Workbench

This project is ideal for small shops, garages, or apartments where space is limited. The bench folds up against the wall when not in use.

Materials List

  • ¾" Plywood (4'×8') – 1 sheet

  • 2×4 studs – 4 pieces, 8' long

  • Piano hinge – 36"

  • Heavy-duty folding shelf brackets – 2

  • Lag screws and anchors

  • Wood glue and screws

Cut List

  • Workbench top: 24" × 48" (¾" plywood)

  • Wall cleat: 48" long (2×4)

  • Folding leg frame: two 24" verticals and one 44" horizontal (2×4s)

Tools Needed

  • Drill and bits

  • Circular saw

  • Stud finder

  • Measuring tape

  • Level

Assembly Instructions

  1. Install Wall Cleat

    • Attach cleat to wall studs at 30–34" height with lag screws.

  2. Attach Bench Top

    • Screw piano hinge to rear of bench top and to wall cleat.

  3. Add Folding Brackets

    • Mount one under each side of the bench to support it when raised.

  4. Optional: Add Legs

    • Build a folding leg frame for added strength.
