This traditional open tote toolbox is perfect for carrying hand tools around the shop or job site. It’s a simple build with timeless charm.
Materials List
¾" Pine or Poplar board, 8 ft long
1" wooden dowel (handle), 18" long
Wood glue
1¼" wood screws
Sandpaper (120/220 grit)
Finish (oil or shellac)
Cut List
(2) Sides: 6" × 20"
(2) Ends: 6" tall (angled to 9") × 10" wide
(1) Bottom: 6" × 18"
(1) Dowel Handle: 18" long
Tools Needed
Saw (table, circular, or hand saw)
Drill with 1" Forstner bit
Clamps
Screwdriver
Sanding block
Steps
Cut and Shape Ends
Cut ends into a trapezoid, 6" tall on the sides, peaking to 9" in the center.
Drill Handle Holes
Drill 1" diameter holes 2" down from the peak.
Assemble Frame
Attach ends to bottom with glue and screws. Attach side panels.
Insert Handle
Slide dowel through holes with a dab of glue to secure.
Sand and Finish
Round all corners. Apply an oil or shellac finish.
