Crafting Sliding Dovetail Joints
Article 143: Crafting Sliding Dovetail Joints
By: A Woodworker Obsessed With Tight Fitting Joinery
Sliding dovetails are strong, elegant joints perfect for attaching shelves or dividers to carcasses.
What You’ll Need
Router with dovetail bit
Straightedge or router track
Marking gauge
Chisels
Test boards
Steps
Mark and Cut Groove
On the carcass side, route a dovetail groove. Start shallow and creep up to full depth (typically ⅜" deep).
Cut the Tail
Use the same dovetail bit to shape the mating board’s end (usually ¾" stock). Make several passes on the router table.
Test Fit
The fit should be tight but slide in with pressure. Use a mallet if needed.
Glue and Insert
Apply glue only at the end to allow wood movement.
Measurements Example
Groove width: ¾" at top, ½" deep
Tail thickness: ¾" stock, tapered to fit
