Article 97: Building a Classic Woodworker’s Tool Tote

This sturdy and nostalgic tool tote is perfect for carrying hand tools from shop to site. Traditional design with angled ends and a dowel handle.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood or softwood

    • Bottom: 24" × 8"

    • Sides: (2) @ 24" × 6"

    • Ends: (2) @ 8" wide × 10" tall (cut with angled tops)

  • 1" hardwood dowel (handle): 18" long

  • Wood glue

  • 1-1/4" wood screws or nails

Tools Needed

  • Saw (hand, circular, or table)

  • Drill + Forstner bit (for dowel hole)

  • Clamps

  • Screwdriver or hammer

  • Measuring tape and square

Steps

  1. Shape End Pieces

    • Cut decorative angle or curve at top. Drill 1" hole centered 2" from top for handle.

  2. Assemble Body

    • Attach ends to bottom panel with glue and screws. Then add side panels.

  3. Install Handle

    • Insert dowel into holes. Glue in place.

  4. Finish

    • Sand and apply oil or shellac.
