Article 98: Repairing Stripped Screw Holes in Wood
By: A Woodworker Who Knows Even the Best Threads Fail
Stripped screw holes are frustrating, but they’re easy to fix permanently with one of several time-tested methods.
Method 1: Toothpick + Glue (Quick Fix)
Fill hole with wood glue and jam in several toothpicks or matchsticks.
Break off flush.
Reinsert screw once dry.
Method 2: Dowel Plug Repair (Best for Hinges)
Drill out the stripped hole to 3/8" or 1/2".
Glue in hardwood dowel.
Once dry, trim flush and pre-drill for new screw.
Method 3: Larger Screw or Threaded Insert
In non-visible spots, consider upsizing the screw.
Or install a threaded insert for lasting strength (e.g. brass insert for cabinet doors).
