Building a Drop-Leaf Side Table

Article 130: Building a Drop-Leaf Side Table

By: A Woodworker Who Loves Furniture That Adapts Like a Good Friend

A drop-leaf side table is a compact, flexible piece—ideal for small spaces and traditional aesthetics. This design features two hinged leaves, turned legs, and a swing-arm support.

Materials

  • ¾" hardwood (cherry, maple, or walnut)

    • Center panel: 16" × 24"

    • (2) drop leaves: 8" × 24"

  • (4) legs: 29" turned or tapered

  • Swing-arm or rule-joint supports (2)

  • (2) brass hinges (leaf support)

  • (4) hinges (drop-leaf joints)

  • Wood glue and finish

Tools Needed

  • Table saw

  • Router with roundover or cove bit (for rule joints)

  • Chisels

  • Drill and driver

  • Clamps

  • Lathe (for turned legs)

Steps

  1. Build Tabletop

    • Glue up center panel and plane smooth.

    • Rout rule joints on center and drop leaves (round on center, cove on leaves).

  2. Attach Hinges

    • Use butt hinges to attach leaves to center. Ensure a smooth folding action.

  3. Leg Assembly

    • Turn or taper legs. Attach via apron and mortise/tenon or pocket holes.

  4. Install Swing Supports

    • Mount pivoting arms inside the apron to support drop leaves.

  5. Finish

    • Sand and apply oil or shellac for a warm, traditional finish.
