The Dutch tool chest is a compact, classic design that holds a surprising amount of tools and fits well in small shops or mobile setups.

Materials

  • ¾" pine or poplar:

    • Sides: 11" × 26½" (2 pcs)

    • Bottom: 11" × 20"

    • Back: 26½" × 20"

    • Front lid: 11" × 20"

    • Fall-front cleats, battens

  • Hinges, screws, lid chain

Tools Needed

  • Saw

  • Drill

  • Clamps

  • Router or plane

  • Chisels

  • Square

Steps

  1. Cut and Assemble Box

    • Cut all panels to size. Join sides to bottom and back with glue and screws or nails.

  2. Install Slanted Lid

    • Angle the top piece at 30°. Fit hinges and chain to support it when open.

  3. Add Fall-Front

    • Build cleats and battens for the removable front panel. This locks tools in place.

  4. Organize Inside

    • Add till, dividers, and holders for chisels, saws, etc.

  5. Finish

    • Paint with milk paint or seal with oil for vintage look.
