A Shaker step stool is a classic, compact piece with clean lines. Perfect for reaching high shelves or serving as a side table, it's a great project for beginners and seasoned builders alike.

Materials

  • 1x8 pine or cherry board, 6' long

  • Wood glue

  • 1 1/4" wood screws (optional)

Cut List:

  • (2) Sides: 14" high x 10" wide (with decorative arch)

  • (2) Steps: 18" wide (top: 9" deep, lower: 6 1/2" deep)

  • (2) Stringers: 6" x 14" (angled for support)

Tools Needed

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw

  • Drill and driver

  • Clamps

  • Sander

  • Measuring tools

Steps

  1. Cut Side Panels

    • Sketch and cut gentle arches on the base. Sand smooth.

  2. Attach Lower Step

    • Glue and screw the lower step between the side panels at 5" above base.

  3. Install Stringers

    • Attach diagonally from bottom rear corner up under the top step for extra strength.

  4. Attach Top Step

    • Secure the top step flush across the top of the side panels.

  5. Sand and Finish

    • Round edges. Finish with shellac or milk paint for an authentic look.
