By: A Woodworker Who Builds for Life

Tilt-out cabinets conceal trash bins while matching kitchen decor. This project uses a face-frame cabinet design with a hinged front and simple tilt hardware.

Materials

  • 3/4" plywood or hardwood panels

  • Piano hinge or standard hinge

  • Trash bin (13–15 gallons)

  • Knob/pull

  • Magnetic catch

  • Pocket screws and glue

Cut List:

  • (2) Sides: 30" x 16"

  • (1) Bottom: 16" x 14"

  • (1) Top: 18" x 17"

  • (1) Tilt-out face: 18" x 20"

Tools Needed

  • Circular saw

  • Drill/driver

  • Kreg jig (for pocket screws)

  • Clamps

  • Hinge jig (optional)

Steps

  1. Build the Box

    • Assemble the sides, bottom, and back using pocket screws and glue.

  2. Add the Tilt Face

    • Mount the face to the bottom front edge using hinges.

  3. Install Tilt Stops

    • Use small chains or wood blocks to control tilt angle (~35–40°).

  4. Attach Knob and Latch

    • Install handle at top center of the tilt face. Add a magnetic catch to keep it closed.

  5. Paint or Stain

    • Match your kitchen. Use polyurethane for durability.
