Article 94: Building a Shaker-Style Wall Shelf – Clean Lines, Practical Design

This Shaker-style wall shelf is elegant, sturdy, and simple to build. It’s perfect for displaying pottery, books, or tools.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood (cherry, maple, or pine recommended)

    • Back: (1) @ 30" × 18"

    • Shelves: (2) @ 30" × 6"

    • Sides: (2) @ 18" × 6" (with curves)

  • Screws (1-1/4")

  • Wood glue

Tools Needed

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw (for curves)

  • Drill + countersink bit

  • Clamps

  • Sandpaper (120 to 220 grit)

  • Router (optional for roundovers)

Build Steps

  1. Shape Sides

    • Cut decorative curves on sides using a template.

  2. Cut Rabbets

    • Back panel fits into rabbets on shelf backs for clean mounting.

  3. Assemble

    • Glue and screw shelves to sides. Attach back panel with glue and screws.

  4. Finish

    • Sand smooth and apply oil or shellac.
