The trestle table base combines stability and beauty, built using through-tenons and wedges. Ideal for large dining tables, it’s sturdy yet disassemblable.
Materials
2x6 hardwood (oak or maple) – Legs and feet
2x4 hardwood – Stretcher
3/4" hardwood wedges
Wood glue
Cut List:
(2) Feet: 30" long
(2) Uprights: 28" tall
(1) Stretcher: 60" long
(2) Top braces: 28" long
Tools Needed
Table saw or miter saw
Drill and spade bit
Mortise chisel
Bandsaw or coping saw
Clamps
Mallet
Steps
Cut All Pieces
Ensure square cuts. Dry-fit before cutting joinery.
Cut Mortises in Uprights
Drill and chisel 1" x 3" mortises for the stretcher (through-tenon).
Shape the Tenons
Tenon ends of stretcher should protrude 1/2" beyond upright and be slotted for wedges.
Attach Legs to Uprights
Use half-lap joints or dowels and glue.
Assemble with Wedges
Insert stretcher, drive in hardwood wedges, and clamp.
Add Top Braces
Screw or dowel top braces across uprights to receive the tabletop.
