Article 43: Building a Trestle Table Base – Elegant Strength from Classic Joinery

By: A Woodworker Who Respects Tradition

The trestle table base combines stability and beauty, built using through-tenons and wedges. Ideal for large dining tables, it’s sturdy yet disassemblable.

Materials

  • 2x6 hardwood (oak or maple) – Legs and feet

  • 2x4 hardwood – Stretcher

  • 3/4" hardwood wedges

  • Wood glue

Cut List:

  • (2) Feet: 30" long

  • (2) Uprights: 28" tall

  • (1) Stretcher: 60" long

  • (2) Top braces: 28" long

Tools Needed

  • Table saw or miter saw

  • Drill and spade bit

  • Mortise chisel

  • Bandsaw or coping saw

  • Clamps

  • Mallet

Steps

  1. Cut All Pieces

    • Ensure square cuts. Dry-fit before cutting joinery.

  2. Cut Mortises in Uprights

    • Drill and chisel 1" x 3" mortises for the stretcher (through-tenon).

  3. Shape the Tenons

    • Tenon ends of stretcher should protrude 1/2" beyond upright and be slotted for wedges.

  4. Attach Legs to Uprights

    • Use half-lap joints or dowels and glue.

  5. Assemble with Wedges

    • Insert stretcher, drive in hardwood wedges, and clamp.

  6. Add Top Braces

    • Screw or dowel top braces across uprights to receive the tabletop.
