Constructing a Wall-Mounted Wine Rack

Article 115: Constructing a Wall-Mounted Wine Rack

By: A Woodworker Who Believes Wine Deserves Better Than a Cabinet

This clean and functional wine rack holds up to 6 bottles horizontally and mounts directly to a wall stud. Great for kitchens, dining rooms, or home bars.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood board (walnut or oak), 36" Γ— 6"

  • 1/2" hardwood dowels (6) @ 8" long

  • Wood glue

  • French cleat hardware or keyhole hangers

  • Finish: clear satin polyurethane

Tools Needed

  • Drill with 1/2" bit

  • Forstner bit (optional for cleaner holes)

  • Clamps

  • Sander or sanding block

  • Measuring tape

  • Level

Steps

  1. Layout Holes

    • Space 6 holes (3 sets of 2) down the board. Each pair should be 3.5" apart horizontally and 6" vertically spaced.

  2. Drill at an Upward Angle (~15Β°)

    • This prevents bottles from slipping out. Use a guide block if needed.

  3. Glue in Dowels

    • Insert dowels into holes, flush to the back, and clamp until dry.

  4. Sand and Finish

    • Smooth all edges and apply at least two coats of polyurethane.

  5. Mount to Wall

    • Use French cleat or heavy-duty keyhole hangers anchored into studs.
