This classic Shaker-style step stool is compact, sturdy, and perfect for kitchens, workshops, or bookshelves. With splayed legs and clean lines, it showcases simplicity and function.

Materials

  • Cherry or maple (ΒΎ" thick stock recommended)

    • Top: 9" Γ— 18"

    • Sides: 7" Γ— 13" (splayed)

    • Stretchers: 1ΒΌ" Γ— 14" (2 pcs)

  • Wood glue

  • Finish: oil/poly blend or shellac

Tools Needed

  • Saw (bandsaw or jigsaw)

  • Router (roundover bit)

  • Chisels

  • Clamps

  • Drill & bit for screws or pegs

  • Sander or hand plane

Steps

  1. Cut Sides with Splay

    • Splay side pieces 5Β° to 10Β° outward for stability. Add arches or curves at the bottom if desired.

  2. Join Stretchers to Sides

    • Use through-tenons, pocket screws, or dowels. Ensure flush alignment.

  3. Attach Top

    • Glue and screw from beneath. Add decorative plugs or pegs on top if desired.

  4. Sand and Finish

    • Soften all edges with roundover bit or sanding. Apply durable finish.
