Restoring Weathered Outdoor Teak Furniture
Article 128: Restoring Weathered Outdoor Teak Furniture
By: A Woodworker Who Knows Silver Patina Isn’t Always the Goal
Outdoor teak furniture ages beautifully, but sun and rain can dull its warmth. Here's how to restore it without removing all the natural character.
Materials
Teak cleaner
Teak brightener (optional)
Sandpaper (120–220 grit)
Teak oil or marine-grade outdoor finish
Tools Needed
Scrub brushes
Hose or low-pressure washer
Sanding block or orbital sander
Rags or foam brushes
Steps
Clean Thoroughly
Use teak cleaner and scrub all surfaces. Rinse well and let dry fully.
Brighten (Optional)
Apply brightener to lighten silver/grey tones. Rinse again and dry.
Light Sanding
Sand only to remove surface fuzz and revive grain. Don’t overdo it—preserve aged wood.
Apply Finish
Use teak oil for natural sheen, or a spar varnish for UV/weather protection. Apply with cloth or brush.
Maintain Annually
Clean and reapply oil/finish yearly to prevent major wear.
