Creating a Segmented Turning Blank – For a Bold Bowl

Article 90: Creating a Segmented Turning Blank – For a Bold Bowl

By: A Woodworker Who Turns Mistakes Into Art

Segmented turning lets you build up rings of wood into a blank that's both beautiful and stable.

Materials

  • Hardwood strips (maple, walnut, cherry), 3/4" thick

  • Wood glue

  • Compass or circle jig

Tools Needed

  • Miter saw with stop block

  • Disc sander or shooting board

  • Clamps

  • Lathe and turning tools

Steps

  1. Cut Segments

    • Decide ring diameter and number of segments (e.g., 12 per ring). Each segment’s miter = 360° ÷ number ÷ 2.

  2. Glue Into Rings

    • Use band clamps. Ensure tight miters. Clamp until dry.

  3. Stack and Glue Rings

    • Alternate grain and colors for visual appeal. Align carefully.

  4. Turn on Lathe

    • Mount between centers. Shape with bowl gouge. Finish with oil or poly.
