Article 89: Repairing a Loose Chair Spindle – A Classic Fix

By: A Woodworker Who Trusts Old Chairs and Hide Glue

Loose spindles can squeak, wobble, or pop out. Here's how to reset them properly.

Materials

  • Liquid hide glue (for reversibility)

  • Toothpicks or shims (optional)

  • Sandpaper (220 grit)

Tools Needed

  • Mallet

  • Clamp

  • Drill or awl (for cleaning out socket)

  • Rag and warm water

Steps

  1. Remove Spindle (If Necessary)

    • Gently wiggle out the loose spindle. Use a damp cloth and mallet if stuck.

  2. Clean Old Glue

    • Scrape out sockets with awl or drill bit. Sand spindle ends lightly.

  3. Test Fit

    • If loose, add shims made from slivers of hardwood or toothpicks.

  4. Glue and Clamp

    • Use hide glue. Insert spindle and clamp. Wipe excess glue.

  5. Check Dry Fit

    • After 24 hours, check for firmness.
