This dovetailed tool tote is sturdy, attractive, and teaches critical hand tool techniques. It’ll last a lifetime and show off your joinery skills.

Materials

  • Pine or poplar:

    • (2) sides: 6" × 18"

    • (2) ends: 6" × 10"

    • (1) bottom: 10" × 17"

    • (1) 1" dowel or hardwood handle: 18" long

Tools Needed

  • Dovetail saw

  • Chisels

  • Mallet

  • Drill

  • Clamps

  • Glue

Steps

  1. Cut Dovetails

    • Mark and cut tails on side panels. Transfer to end panels and cut pins.

  2. Dry Fit Box

    • Check joinery before gluing. Adjust as needed for tight joints.

  3. Drill Handle Holes

    • Centered at top of each end panel, drill 1" holes for the dowel handle.

  4. Glue-Up

    • Assemble the box. Clamp square. Insert handle with glue or screws.

  5. Attach Bottom Panel

    • Screw or glue the bottom in place. Sand all surfaces smooth.
