An entryway bench provides a place to sit while putting on shoes, and this version offers a hidden storage compartment under the seat—perfect for gloves, scarves, or bags.
Materials
3/4" cabinet-grade plywood – (1) full sheet
1×3 hardwood (face frame and trim)
1×2 hardwood (lid supports)
Piano hinge – 36"
Edge banding (optional)
Wood glue and screws
Cut List
Top (lid): 48" × 15"
Sides: (2) @ 15" × 18"
Front/back: (2) @ 48" × 18"
Bottom: 46 1/2" × 13 1/2"
Face frame: (4) @ 1×3 cut to fit
Tools Needed
Table saw or circular saw with straightedge
Drill/driver
Clamps
Sander
Edge banding iron (optional)
Steps
Cut Panels
Label all pieces and cut clean edges. Apply edge banding where visible.
Assemble Box
Use glue and screws to join sides, front, and back to form the carcass. Add bottom panel.
Install Face Frame
Attach 1×3s flush with front using glue and brad nails.
Install Hinged Lid
Mount piano hinge to lid and back panel. Check alignment before final fastening.
Finish
Sand thoroughly and apply paint or stain. Consider a cushion on top.
