Article 74: Wall-Mounted Chisel Rack – Simple, Safe, and Sturdy

By: A Woodworker Who Got Tired of Chisels Rolling in Drawers

This chisel rack keeps edges protected and your most-used hand tools at eye level. Made from scrap hardwood, it’s a 2-hour project with lasting shop value.

Materials

  • 3/4" hardwood (scrap) – 12" × 6"

  • 1/4" plywood (back panel)

  • Wood glue

  • Screws for mounting

Tools Needed

  • Drill and Forstner bits

  • Saw (hand or table)

  • Sandpaper

  • Ruler and square

Steps

  1. Mark Hole Layout

    • Evenly space 1" apart. Use Forstner bits matching each chisel handle’s diameter.

  2. Drill Holes

    • Bore halfway through front rail (about 3/4" deep). Test-fit each chisel.

  3. Cut Slots

    • Saw vertical relief cuts from front edge to each hole, allowing easy tool removal.

  4. Attach Back Panel

    • Glue and screw the rack face to a plywood backer for stability.

  5. Mount to Wall

    • Use screws into studs or French cleat.
