A folding laptop desk is ideal for small spaces or lap work. This lightweight design folds flat and unfolds into a stable writing or laptop surface with a mid-century vibe.
Materials
1/2" Baltic birch plywood – 2’ × 4’ sheet
3/4" hardwood (oak or walnut) for trim – ~6 linear feet
Brass hinges (2) – 2"
Furniture buttons or felt pads
Finish: satin polyurethane
Cut List
Desktop: 24" x 16"
Legs (2): 14" x 10", tapering to 6"
Rear support rail: 20" x 2"
Trim: 3/4" hardwood edge banding, 2' each side
Tools Needed
Jigsaw or bandsaw (for tapers)
Drill and countersink
Router (chamfer bit optional)
Clamps and square
Screwdriver
Steps
Cut Main Parts
Shape legs with gentle inward tapers for a clean look.
Attach Trim
Glue and clamp hardwood edge banding around top for strength and contrast.
Add Hinges
Install hinges at the top edge of each leg, allowing fold-under motion.
Attach Rear Rail
Connect legs with a rear support to add lateral strength.
Finish
Sand everything smooth. Apply 2 coats of poly with sanding between coats.
