By: A Woodworker Who Loves Making the Everyday Better

A folding laptop desk is ideal for small spaces or lap work. This lightweight design folds flat and unfolds into a stable writing or laptop surface with a mid-century vibe.

Materials

  • 1/2" Baltic birch plywood – 2’ × 4’ sheet

  • 3/4" hardwood (oak or walnut) for trim – ~6 linear feet

  • Brass hinges (2) – 2"

  • Furniture buttons or felt pads

  • Finish: satin polyurethane

Cut List

  • Desktop: 24" x 16"

  • Legs (2): 14" x 10", tapering to 6"

  • Rear support rail: 20" x 2"

  • Trim: 3/4" hardwood edge banding, 2' each side

Tools Needed

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw (for tapers)

  • Drill and countersink

  • Router (chamfer bit optional)

  • Clamps and square

  • Screwdriver

Steps

  1. Cut Main Parts

    • Shape legs with gentle inward tapers for a clean look.

  2. Attach Trim

    • Glue and clamp hardwood edge banding around top for strength and contrast.

  3. Add Hinges

    • Install hinges at the top edge of each leg, allowing fold-under motion.

  4. Attach Rear Rail

    • Connect legs with a rear support to add lateral strength.

  5. Finish

    • Sand everything smooth. Apply 2 coats of poly with sanding between coats.
