Article 48: French Cleat Wall System – Flexible, Organized Storage

By: A Woodworker Who Loves a Custom Shop

The French cleat system is modular wall storage that adapts as your tool collection grows. With angled cleats and custom holders, it’s the ultimate DIY organization project.

Materials

  • 1/2" or 3/4" plywood strips (for cleats and holders)

  • 2 1/2" screws

  • Wood glue

Standard Cleat Dimensions:

  • Wall Cleats: 45° beveled strips, 3" x 48"

  • Tool Holders: 3/4" ply backers with matching 45° cleats

Tools Needed

  • Table saw (for 45° bevel cuts)

  • Drill and driver

  • Stud finder

  • Level

  • Clamps

Steps

  1. Rip Cleats

    • Cut long strips at a 45° angle lengthwise. Each cut yields two matching cleats.

  2. Mount Wall Cleats

    • Screw directly into wall studs every 16". Level carefully.

  3. Build Holders

    • Make tool-specific holders with matching beveled cleats. Add hooks, shelves, or compartments.

  4. Hang and Rearrange

    • Place holders anywhere on cleats. Easily move or swap as needed.
