The French cleat system is modular wall storage that adapts as your tool collection grows. With angled cleats and custom holders, it’s the ultimate DIY organization project.
Materials
1/2" or 3/4" plywood strips (for cleats and holders)
2 1/2" screws
Wood glue
Standard Cleat Dimensions:
Wall Cleats: 45° beveled strips, 3" x 48"
Tool Holders: 3/4" ply backers with matching 45° cleats
Tools Needed
Table saw (for 45° bevel cuts)
Drill and driver
Stud finder
Level
Clamps
Steps
Rip Cleats
Cut long strips at a 45° angle lengthwise. Each cut yields two matching cleats.
Mount Wall Cleats
Screw directly into wall studs every 16". Level carefully.
Build Holders
Make tool-specific holders with matching beveled cleats. Add hooks, shelves, or compartments.
Hang and Rearrange
Place holders anywhere on cleats. Easily move or swap as needed.
