This elegant frame uses 1/4" dowels for clean joinery without relying on miters. Perfect for artwork, prints, or keepsakes.
Materials
Hardwood strips: (4) @ desired dimensions (e.g., 16" Γ 1.5" Γ 3/4")
1/4" dowels: 8 pieces @ 1.5" long
Glass or acrylic insert
Backer board + clips
Wood glue
Tools Needed
Dowel jig or drill guide
Clamps
Miter box (optional for decorative corners)
Router (for glass rabbet)
Sander
Steps
Cut Frame Parts
Butt joints, not miters. 2 verticals, 2 horizontals.
Drill Dowel Holes
Use dowel jig to drill two holes per joint.
Route Rabbet
Use 1/4" straight bit to make recess for glass.
Glue and Clamp
Insert dowels, glue joints, and clamp until dry.
Finish
Sand, apply finish, and insert artwork.
