Article 105: Making a Dowel-Jointed Picture Frame

This elegant frame uses 1/4" dowels for clean joinery without relying on miters. Perfect for artwork, prints, or keepsakes.

Materials

  • Hardwood strips: (4) @ desired dimensions (e.g., 16" Γ— 1.5" Γ— 3/4")

  • 1/4" dowels: 8 pieces @ 1.5" long

  • Glass or acrylic insert

  • Backer board + clips

  • Wood glue

Tools Needed

  • Dowel jig or drill guide

  • Clamps

  • Miter box (optional for decorative corners)

  • Router (for glass rabbet)

  • Sander

Steps

  1. Cut Frame Parts

    • Butt joints, not miters. 2 verticals, 2 horizontals.

  2. Drill Dowel Holes

    • Use dowel jig to drill two holes per joint.

  3. Route Rabbet

    • Use 1/4" straight bit to make recess for glass.

  4. Glue and Clamp

    • Insert dowels, glue joints, and clamp until dry.

  5. Finish

    • Sand, apply finish, and insert artwork.
