Repairing a Warped Cabinet Door

Article 104: Repairing a Warped Cabinet Door

By: A Woodworker Who Knows Doors Should Close Flat

Cabinet doors can warp due to humidity or improper storage. Here’s how to correct or minimize a warp to get it swinging straight again.

Symptoms

  • Door rubs on one side

  • Doesn’t close flush

  • Visible twist or bow

Method 1: Reverse Moisture Correction

  1. Dampen Concave Side

    • Light mist of water or damp cloth overnight.

  2. Clamp Flat with Cauls

    • Use pipe clamps and straight boards.

    • Leave for 24–48 hours.

  3. Apply Finish

    • Seal both sides evenly afterward.

Method 2: Kerf Relief Cuts (Severe Warps)

  1. Cut Kerfs in Back Side

    • Use circular saw: shallow cuts perpendicular to warp.

    • Fill with glue and clamp flat.

  2. Reinforce if Needed

    • Add battens or spline if area won’t be visible.

Tools Needed

  • Pipe clamps + cauls

  • Spray bottle

  • Circular saw (kerfing)

  • Straightedge
