Segmented bowls allow you to create beautiful patterns using different wood types. This article covers the basics for a beginner bowl.
Materials
Walnut, maple, cherry (variety for contrast)
Wood glue
Sandpaper (80β400 grit)
Finish (Danish oil or wipe-on poly)
Tools Needed
Miter saw with sled
Disc sander (or sanding jig)
Lathe + bowl gouge
Calipers
Clamps or rubber bands
Steps
Design Rings
Each ring has 12 segments cut at 15Β° angles.
Cut and Sand Segments
Use sled for precision. Sand ends flat for tight joints.
Glue Rings
Use cauls or rubber bands to clamp. Make 3β5 rings total.
Stack and Glue Rings
Use glue between layers. Clamp with weight.
Turn on Lathe
Shape outside first, then hollow interior.
Sand and Finish
Progressively sand. Apply oil or finish of choice.
