Article 102: Making a Segmented Wooden Bowl

By: A Woodworker Who Likes Geometry and Grain

Segmented bowls allow you to create beautiful patterns using different wood types. This article covers the basics for a beginner bowl.

Materials

  • Walnut, maple, cherry (variety for contrast)

  • Wood glue

  • Sandpaper (80–400 grit)

  • Finish (Danish oil or wipe-on poly)

Tools Needed

  • Miter saw with sled

  • Disc sander (or sanding jig)

  • Lathe + bowl gouge

  • Calipers

  • Clamps or rubber bands

Steps

  1. Design Rings

    • Each ring has 12 segments cut at 15Β° angles.

  2. Cut and Sand Segments

    • Use sled for precision. Sand ends flat for tight joints.

  3. Glue Rings

    • Use cauls or rubber bands to clamp. Make 3–5 rings total.

  4. Stack and Glue Rings

    • Use glue between layers. Clamp with weight.

  5. Turn on Lathe

    • Shape outside first, then hollow interior.

  6. Sand and Finish

    • Progressively sand. Apply oil or finish of choice.
