Article 103: Building a Shaker-Style Step Stool

This simple two-step stool is built in the classic Shaker tradition: clean lines, light tapering, and rock-solid joinery. Great for reaching high shelves or as a child’s seat.

Materials

  • 3/4" pine or cherry:

    • Top step: 16" × 8"

    • Lower step: 14" × 7"

    • Sides: (2) @ 14" × 12", shaped with curved cut

    • Back apron: 14" × 6"

    • Front apron: 12" × 4"

  • Wood glue

  • 1-1/4" pocket hole screws (or dowels)

Tools Needed

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw (for side profile)

  • Pocket hole jig or dowel jig

  • Clamps

  • Drill

  • Sander

Steps

  1. Cut Side Panels

    • Add a gentle curve at the base and step notch.

  2. Assemble Frame

    • Attach aprons between sides using pocket holes or dowels.

  3. Add Steps

    • Glue and screw each step into its respective notch.

  4. Finish

    • Sand all edges round. Apply milk paint or Danish oil.
