This simple two-step stool is built in the classic Shaker tradition: clean lines, light tapering, and rock-solid joinery. Great for reaching high shelves or as a child’s seat.
Materials
3/4" pine or cherry:
Top step: 16" × 8"
Lower step: 14" × 7"
Sides: (2) @ 14" × 12", shaped with curved cut
Back apron: 14" × 6"
Front apron: 12" × 4"
Wood glue
1-1/4" pocket hole screws (or dowels)
Tools Needed
Jigsaw or bandsaw (for side profile)
Pocket hole jig or dowel jig
Clamps
Drill
Sander
Steps
Cut Side Panels
Add a gentle curve at the base and step notch.
Assemble Frame
Attach aprons between sides using pocket holes or dowels.
Add Steps
Glue and screw each step into its respective notch.
Finish
Sand all edges round. Apply milk paint or Danish oil.
