Wooden trays are both functional and aesthetic. They can be used for serving or as a decorative element in any room. Here’s a simple guide to building a sturdy, stylish wooden tray with handles.

Materials

Tools Needed

  • Circular saw or miter saw

  • Drill and drill bits

  • Sandpaper or sander

  • Wood clamps

Steps

  1. Cut the Wood Pieces

    • Cut four pieces of the 1x8 pine board for the sides of the tray (two pieces 20” long, two pieces 14” long).

    • Cut a piece of 1/4” plywood to fit the bottom of the tray (14” x 20”).

  2. Assemble the Frame

    • Use wood glue and screws to attach the four side pieces, forming a rectangular frame.

  3. Install the Bottom

    • Attach the plywood bottom to the frame with wood glue and screws.

  4. Add Handles

    • Cut two 1x8 pieces to 8” long. Drill holes for handles and attach them to the sides of the tray using screws.

  5. Sand and Finish

    • Sand all surfaces and apply your choice of wood finish or paint.
