Article 107: Repairing Stripped Screw Holes in Wood

Stripped screw holes are a common nuisance in cabinet doors, chair frames, and hinges. Here's how to fix them properly.

Materials & Options

Option 1: Toothpick & Glue

  • Wood glue

  • Toothpicks or matchsticks

Option 2: Hardwood Plug

  • 1/4" dowel or plug cutter

  • Drill & glue

Option 3: Oversize Screw

  • Next-size-up screw (if wood strength permits)

Tools Needed

  • Drill

  • Hammer

  • Saw or chisel

  • Clamps (optional)

Steps for Option 2: Hardwood Plug

  1. Drill Out Hole

    • Clean hole with 1/4" bit.

  2. Insert Plug

    • Coat dowel with glue, insert tightly. Let dry.

  3. Trim Flush

    • Cut excess dowel with flush-cut saw.

  4. Redrill

    • Drill a new pilot hole for the screw.
